What is HIIT?
HIIT stands for high intensity interval training, a training technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. Intervals generally range from 20-60 seconds of work, followed by 10-30 seconds of rest. For example, Tabata HIIT is 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest.
Why We Love HIIT
Whether it's just yourself or a group of friends, breaking your workouts into timed sections is in our opinion one of the best forms of fitness.
1. Quick and Convenient
You can do it anywhere, with no equipment, in a short period of time. What's not to love?! You can break just about anything into intervals to create an incredibly challenging and effective workout in a matter of minutes.
2. Increases Your Metabolism
Aka, you burn more calories. HIIT creates the "afterburn" effect (also known as EPOC) which is why intense exercise will help burn more fat and calories than regular aerobic and steady-state workouts.
3. Great for Groups
HIIT is an easy way to level the playing field if there are extreme differences in physical capabilities, aka, you work as hard as YOU can in the time allotted, so there's no feeling like you have to "keep up"or slow down. Try the HIIT workout below with a buddy or group of friends and see what you think!
Use a timer on your phone to make keeping track of your rounds that much easier. Click here to use our favorite free online timer.
Modify where you need to and be consistent. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing pushups from your knees and getting a full range of motion each time. Quality reps is more important that quantity! Pick something you know you can carry through all 8 rounds.
Set a timer for your rest and stick to it! This workout should be no more than 25 minutes (each set of 8 rounds is 4 minutes total).
Push through the pain! These movements will get tiring (thats the point), but don't shy away from the burn, that's where the magic happens!
