5 Foolproof Smoothie Bowl Recipes

You've seen them filling your Instagram feed, colorful and lush, topped and styled with exquisitely cut strawberries, kiwis and figs, that look more like they belong in an art gallery rather than atop blended fruits and vegetables. Now here you are, ready to give this smoothie bowl thing a try, and you've come to the right place. If you don't like bananas though (for some insane reason), leave now.

So, having made my fair share of failed smoothie bowls––too runny, too sweet, not sweet enough, frozen broccoli will always make it grainy––here are my top 5 smoothie bowl recipes that you can't mess up. (No guarantees with the fruit art though.)

1. Pretty in Pink

Sweet and simple, just how we like it. The almond milk can be substituted for any nut milk, enjoy!

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 3 frozen bananas
  • 1/2 vanilla bean or 1tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened (vanilla) almond milk

Blend all ingredients, top with shaved coconut, raw granola, and any fruit you desire! Makes 2 servings.

2. Coco Loco

This creamy coconut concoction is one of my favorites and is a perfect fit for the coconut lover out there.

  • 1 cup canned coconut milk
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen coconut meat
  • 4-5 coconut milk ice cubes (if you want to take the time to make them)
  • 1Tbs chia seeds
  • 1tsp honey

Blend all ingredients, top with 2tbs of shredded coconut, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Makes 2 servings (or 1 if you're feeling it).

3. Beat It Punk

This is my most frequently made recipe by far. The avocado is the secret to super creamy and delicious bowls!

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 2Tbs almond butter
  • 1/2 small avocado (1/4 of a big one)
  • 1 cup spinach (or more)
  • 1/4 raw beatroot

Blend all ingredients, top with granola, chia seeds, sliced bananas and almonds.. Makes 1 serving.

4. PB&Heyy there's chocolate in here!

No jelly here, just delicious, chocolatey, peanut buttery goodness that's good morning, noon and night.

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup chocolate almond milk (regular is fine)
  • 2tbs raw peanut butter
  • 1Tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4tsp vanilla extract
  • 1Tbs maple syrup

Blend all ingredients and top with peanut butter (slightly warmed and runny), bananas, cocoa nibs and puffed rice or granola. Makes 1 serving.

5. Bahama Mama

Talk about refreshing. Take a trip to the tropics with this bright and sunny smoothie bowl.

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk (carton not can)
  • 1/2 small avocado (1/4 of a big one)
  • Big squeeze of lemon

Blend all ingredients, top with shaved coconut, chia seeds and raspberries. Makes 1 serving.

Bonus Pro-Tips!

  • Add half of the ingredients with the full serving of liquid, blend, then add the other half.
  • Put smoothie ingredients into a baggie and freeze. This makes for thicker bowls and you can take them to work etc.!
  • Slice up and freeze bananas in bulk ahead of time
  • Use ripe bananas if possible
  • Make your own granola! It's super easy and contains way less sugar. This is a good base recipe: Homemade Granola. Trader Joe's also has a great selection of very affordable, raw granolas.
